A novel acrylate, 2-(3-isopropoxycarbonylamino-4-methyl-phenyl carbamoyloxy)-propyl acrylate (IMPPA), derived from 2,4-toluene diisocyanate (TDD was synthesized via a two-step reaction and its chemical structure was verified by means of FT-IR, ~1H-NMR and elemental analysis. A new kind of latex was prepared via copolymerization of IMP-PA with butyl acrylate, styrene and acrylic acid in the presence of dodecyl diphenyl ether sodium disulfonate (SDD) and OP-10 as emulsifiers. Results showed that the monomer conversion was influenced by the amounts of initiator ammonium persulfate (APS) , surfactant system and IMPPA. The stability of the latex was affected by various factors. Latex with good stability could be prepared by continuous method with the feeding time between 1. 5h and 2h, and required 7% (weight proportion in the solid content) of surfactants (OP-10 : SDD=2 : 5), 1% amount of APS and 0. 4% of ammonium bicarbonate.
