The influences of primary jets on aerodynamic flow field and pollutant emissions within a dual-stage swirler combustor are investigated experimentally. A two-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is used to map both the non-reacting and reacting flow fields within the primary zones of the model gas turbine combustor with a dual-stages swirler at different primary jets diameters and locations. The profiles of mean velocity, turbulent velocity and Reynolds shear stress are measured simultaneously. The multiple-point thermocouple probe is employed to obtain the radial profiles of the exit gas temperature. The multiple-point gas sampling probe is used to measure radial distributions of the exit pollutant concentrations. Experimental data show that the central recirculation zone is significantly affected by aerodynamic interactions between primary air jets and the swirling flow. The primary jets play a quite important role to enhance flame stability and achieve satisfactory outlet gas temperature profiles and pollutant emission characteristics for a gas turbine combustor.
