Design and Preparation of a Surgical Biomaterial Patch

The biomaterial patch of electrospun collagen type I fibers was designed and prepared successfully in this study. Electrospun collagen fibrous patches were produced by electrospinning of 7 various levels of concentrations (ranged from 8% to 20%w/v) of collagen solutions. The tensile strength,yield strength and elastic modulus of 7 groups of electrospun collagen fibrous patches were determined in dry conditions using the electronic tensile test machine. The mechanical properties of 2 groups of above were recommended as a suitable surgical patch for clinical transplantation. The results showed no significant differences versus fresh porcine pericardium as controls. The SEM images of the 2 groups showed that the patches were smooth and uniform with the interwoven and porous morphology. So the electrospun collagen fibrous patches have a great potential as a surgical biomaterial patch.
