摘要

Welcome to Visualization '92, the third annual IEEE conferenceon visualization, held October 19-23, 1992, in Boston,Massachusetts. The Visualization Conference series is inspired andsponsored by the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee onComputer Graphics in cooperation with ACM/SIGGRAPH.

rn

The role of visualization in science, engineering, medicine, andbusiness has been expounded in many journals, articles, andconferences. The Visualization Conference series is concerned withall aspects of visualization, with a focus on interdisciplinarytechniques. It explores how visualization is used to extractknowledge from data acquired in a variety of applications. Theconference allows a dialogue to occur between the developers ofvisualization methods and visualization users.

rn

These proceedings contain the 44 full papers presented duringthe three-day technical paper program at the conference. We feelthat this program represents state-of-the-art visualizationresearch and applications. The preeminence of the technical paperprogram stems from the very large number of excellent-qualitypapers submitted.

rn

The full papers and, where submitted, the accompanyingvideotapes, were refereed by at least three reviewers, generallyincluding two members of the program committee. Every effort wasmade to guarantee that the paper and the expertise of the reviewerwere well-matched. Based on the reviewers' rankings and, in somecases, on additional reviews and lengthy conference calls, thePapers Chairs were convinced that the best selections to meet theconference goals were made.

rn

The July 1992 issue of iIEEE Computer Graphics andApplications (CG&A)/i was a special issue devotedto updates of several of the best of the Visualization '91 papers.A 1993 issue of CG&A will be devoted to updates ofimportant papers from the 1992 conference. We thank Peter Wilson,editor-in-chief of CG&A for his support in theseendeavors.

rn

The Visualization '92 conference proceedings also include asection of papers from the case studies program of the conference. These papers deal with interdisciplinary issues of visualization, and demonstrate important applications, with emphasis on thetransition from theory to practice. The case studies were selectedfrom proposals submitted to LloydTreinish and Deborah Silver, CaseStudies Chairs. Thisuniquecase studies program is an integral andvital part of the conference, and the high quality of this portionof the program is a direct result of the dedication of the CaseStudies Chairs.

rn

The third section of the proceedings is the panels program, which includes summaries and position papers by the panels chairsand panelists. Thepanelscover many diverseissues invisualization, including techniques, tools, perception, and interaction. It took agreat deal of work by the Panels Chairs, Larry Rosenblum and NahumGershon, and the slated panelists to make this programpossible.

rn

The keynote speaker at the opening session is Eugene Wong,Associate Director for Industrial Technology, Office of Science andTechnology Policy, Executive Office of the President. He describesthe presidential initiative on High-Performance Computing andCommunications and the strategic vision that it brings.Visualization is one of the key areas that will be profoundlyaffected by both technological advances and increased access tohigh-performance computing and communications.

rn

A keynote panel, "Interactions between Visualization andScience," follows the keynote address. The panelists are RobertLangridge, Jeff Dozier, John Conway, and Stephen Benton, and themoderator is Larry Rosenblum. The capstone address that closes theconference is given by Margaret Livingstone of Harvard MedicalSchool. Her talk is titled "Parallel Processing of Form, Color,Motion, and Depth: Anatomy, Physiology, Art, and Illusion."

rn

These outstanding keynote events are the work of many members ofthe conference committee, but the Panels Chairs merit specialmention.

rn

The final portion of the proceedings is the color section, inwhich the color plates for the papers are collated. Black and whiteversions are contained in the papers. It is unusual for aconference this size to produce color at no charge to the authors, but it is essential for this topic area.

rn

A videotape of submitted animations has been prepared and isbeing distributed as a supplement to these proceedings. Thanks aredue to Vi&o Chairs Eric Grosse and Ed Council, who lenttheir expertise and time to produce this indispensable appendix ofthe Visualization '92 proceedings.
