Fault characterization, which is the focus of thisrnpaper, relates to the prediction of whether pressurerncommunication or fluid flow is likely to occurrnacross a fault. Detailed fault characterization canrnassist in optimizing development decisions andrnstrategies. This study focuses on Area-1 of thernMinas oil field in the Central Sumatra Basin andrncombines fault seal analysis and interferencernpressure testing. The data used in this studyrnincludes 3D seismic, wireline logs, reservoirrnpressures and pressure transient data, regional andrnlocalized geology references.rnThe Shale Gouge Ratio (SGR) fault seal analysisrntechnique forms the basis of this study, and is aimedrnat identifying communication across the fault planernin Minas Field Area-1. SGR is an estimate of thernproportion of shale material in the fault plane and isrnan indicator of whether or not the fault is likely tornbe sealing. The range of the SGR in the fault is 10rnto 65%: these values represent the potential for thernfault to be sealing or partially leaking. Therncalibration based on reservoir pressure andrninterference test data indicates that an SGR ofrnapproximately 16% represents the thresholdrnbetween a leaking and sealing fault.rnIn terms of reservoir management, recognition ofrnthe sealing capacity of faults helps in decidingrnwhether a pattern injection approach (across arnleaking fault) or mini-peripheral injection approachrn(against a sealing fault) will lead to better recovery.
