Shale plays are an extremely difficult arena inrnwhich to explore because they are all different.rnWhile general lessons can be translated from play tornplay there are important differences which controlrnexploration and development decisions. Due to thernheterogeneity of resource plays they can even differrnwithin a single field. This means that effectualrndevelopment of shale plays requires extensivernevaluation and coordination of various data sourcesrnsuch as geology, geophysics, geomechanics,rnpetrophysics, and engineering. (Durham, 2012).rnHowever, while these conventional disciplines bringrna wealth of important data to the discussion, onernimportant data set is often lacking – namelyrnhydrocarbon data. Additionally, given the currentrnprice of gas, it becomes paramount for technologiesrnto emerge that can correctly characterize liquid richrnareas in a field and differentiate these from gasrnportions of the play. This is particularly true in thernUtica shale.
