A STACK PROBE FOR THE ANALYSIS OF CARBON MONOXIDE AND OXYGEN

The design of an oxygen and carbon monoxide analyzer for combustion control optimization applications is described. The analyzer is packaged as a stainless steel probe for direct insertion into the stack environment. Samples are drawn into a sample valve and injected into a stripper and gas chromatographic column where carbon monoxide and oxygen are separated while the acid gases are backflushed, to vent. The detector assembly consists of two stabilized zirconia solid state oxygen cells operated in the current mode to pump oxygen into and out of the detector. This operation at ideal coulometric efficiency allows analysis of the resolved O_2 and CO samples and eliminates the need for standard gases for calibration. Accuracy is maintained in the range of 100 ppm to 1% oxygen and 20 ppm to 4000 ppm carbon monoxide. Acceptable performance was demonstrated in the field on industrial boilers.
