A method for the rapid quantitative determination of total aromatic molecules in light lube oil distillates and two types of finished oils by infrared spectroscopy utilizing a microprocessor controlled spectrometer is presented. The method is also applicable to solvent extracted process intermediates. Calibration curves for each class of oils were prepared using actual samples which were analyzed by HPLC and high purity n-hexadecane blends of those samples. Statistical comparison of the infrared results with data derived from a standard HPLC procedure yielded correlation coefficients from .99 to .92 (a perfect correlation = 1.00). This method is applicable to both laboratory and on-line process analyzers for lube oil process control.
