摘要

Welcome to Visualization '91, the second annual IEEE conferenceon Visualization, held October 22-25, 1991 in San Diego, Califomia. This conference series is inspired and sponsored by the IEEETechnical Committee on Computer Graphics in cooperation withACM/SIGGRAPH.>The role of visualization, in science, engineering, medicine, and business, has been expounded in many journals and articles. Some recent references include the 1987 NSF Report on Visualizationin Scientific Computing, the August 1989iComputer/i special issue on scientificvisualization, the Proceedings of Visualization '90, and the May1991 iIEEE Computer Graphics and Applications/ispecial issue on visualization which featured updates from severalof the best papers from the 1990 Visualization conference.>The Visualization conference series is concerned with allaspects of visualization, with a focus on interdisciplinarytechniques. It explores how visualization is being used to extractknowledge from data acquired in a variety of applications. Theconference allows a dialogue to occur between the developers ofvisualization methods and visualization usem.>These proceedings publish the 41 N1 papers presented during thethree days of the technical paper program at the conference. Wefeel that this program represents the state of the art invisualization research and applications. The preeminence of thetechnical paper program stems from the large number of veryhighquality papers submitted.>The full papers and, where submitted, the accompanyingvideotapes, were refereed by at least three reviewers, generallyincluding two members of the program committee. Every effort wasmade to guarantee that the paper and the expertise of the reviewerwere well-matched. Based on the reviewers' rankings, and, in somecases, on additional reviews and lengthy conference calls, thepapers co-chairs were convinced that the best selections to meetthe conference goals were made.>The reviewers provided detailed comments and corrections, andmet the very strict deadlines required by the review/publicationprocess. Along with the authors, we owe the reviewers credit forthe proceedings.>The Visualization '91 conference proceedings also include asection of papers from the case studies program of the conference. These papers deal with interdisciplinary issues of visualization, and demonstrate important applications, with emphasis on thetransition from theory to practice. The case studies were selectedfrom submitted proposals by Paul Hazan and Jeff Posdammer. Thisunique case studies program is an integral and vital part of theconference, and the high quality of this portion of the program isa direct result of the dedication of the case studiesco-chairs.>The third section of the proceedings is the panels program, which includes summaries and position papers by the panels chairsand panelists. The panels cover many diverse issues invisualization, including techniques, tools, perception, andinteraction. It took a great deal of work by panels co-chairs DanBergeron and Nahum Gershon and the slated panelists to make thisprogram possible.>The keynote speaker at the opening session is Dr. Larry Smarr,Director of the National Center for Supcrcomputer Applications.Besides playing a major role in developing national support forsupercomputing and visualization, Dr. Smarr is an internationallyrecognized astrophysicist. He represents the interdisciplinarynature of visualization that the Visualization conference seriesendeavors to address. A keynote panel has also been arranged. Itwill be the Edwin H. Land Memorial Panel "From Perception toVisualization," commemorating the work of Edwin H. Land, whoserecent passing saddened us all. 'The capstone address to close theconference will be given by Dr. Michael Marmor, Chairman of theDept. of Gpthalmology at Stanford University. Dr. Marmor haspioneered the exploration of the relationship between art andvisual physiology. These outstanding keynote events are the work ofmany members of theconference committee, but Arie Kaufman andNahum Gershon merit special mention.>The final portion of the proceedings is the color section, inwhich the color plates for the papers am collated. Black and whiteversions are contained in the papers. It is unusual for aconference this size to produce color at no charge to the authors, but it is essential for this topic area. A videotape is also beingprepared of submitted animations. Welcome to Visualization '91, thesecond annual IEEE conference on Visualization, held October 22-25,1991 in San Diego, Califomia. This conference series is inspiredand sponsored by the IEEE Technical Committee on Computer Graphicsin cooperation with ACM/SIGGRAPH.

Arie Kaufman和Nahum Gershon。
