Electrochemical oxidation of milking parlour wastewater and waste milk was investigated in this study.Dairy farming discharges large amounts of wastewater contained dairy manure,washing fluid and some chemicals from a milking parlour.Waste milk is frequently discharged with the wastewater.It is difficult to apply biological treatment for milking parlour wastewater,because organic load of waste milk is not stable and wastewater contains biologically persistent matters.Electrochemical treatment is considered as one of the advanced oxidation processes.We discussed the effect of anode materials on degradability of organic matters in milking parlour wastewater and waste milk.The concentration of COD of milking parlour wastewater was decreased 14% or 45% in 6 hours by electrochemical treatment using a DSA or Ti/PbO2 anode,respectively.The electrochemical oxidation at both anodes had low degradability of low molecular weight carboxylic acid such as acetic acid in milking parlour wastewater.The concentration of COD of diluted raw milk was decreased 88% by electrochemical treatment using a Ti/PbO2 anode for 6 hours.It was indicated that lactose in waste milk was degraded by electrogenerated oxidants,which was adsorbed on Ti/Pb02 anode.The result suggested that electrochemical treatment using a Ti/Pb02 anode was suitable for the treatment of waste milk.
