UnaGrid is an opportunistic virtual grid infrastructure thatrntakes advantage of the idle processing capabilities ofrnconventional desktop machines in computer labs throughrnthe use of Customizable Processing Virtual Clustersrn(CPVCs), these capabilities are used in the developmentrnof e-Science projects. Up to now, however, a dedicatedrnNFS-NAS solution is employed as the storage system.rnThis solution does not take advantage of the idle storagerncapabilities of the desktop machines. This paper presentsrnthe design, implementation and assessment of a virtualrnstorage system, which simultaneously allows UnaGrid torntake advantage of the storage and processing capabilitiesrnavailable in tens of desktop machines. The tests executedrnshow that the strategy used to create the virtual storagernsystem achieves large storage capabilities, at low cost,rnand superior performance than a NFS-NAS dedicatedrnsolution.
