For fifty years, from the start of television transmissions in around 1937, there was a rather slow evolution of new technology and services. Admittedly, by 1987, semiconductors had largely replaced valves in television sets; there were four national channels; colour had been introduced; and teletext was becoming standard jon the larger television sets. Yet these changes and the leisurely pace with which they were introduced seem modest compared to what has followed in the decade since 1987.
