摘要

@@ The College of Agriculture at Utah State University (USU) was founded in 1890 as the Utah Agricultural College. By 1911 several departments had been formed including the Agronomy and Horticulture Departments. These departments were merged to form the Plant Science Department in 1965 and were subsequently merged with Department of Soils and Biometeorology to form the current Department of Plants, Soils, and Climate (PSC). Even though Utah has traditionally been an agricultural state, by 1990 about 78 % of the population lived in the four most populous counties along the Wasatch Front (Utah Governor's Office of Planning and Budget, 2000). This trend has continued so that now Utah is even more of an urban state. While alfalfa (Medkago sativa L.) hay production is still the most important plant crop in Utah, it is being supplanted by ornamental horticulture crops such as turfgrass.
