The effects of chemical etching on the surface chemistry and topography of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers were investigated. The physical and chemical changes on the fiber surface were examined with scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared/attenuated total reflectance. The dyriamic mechanical properties of the treated and untreated UHMWPE fiber reinforced high-density polyethylene (UHMWPE/HDPE) composites were determined by dynamic mechanical analysis. Then, the effects of the chemical and physical factors on dynamic mechanical properties were discussed. The results indicated that the dynamic storage modulus values of the treated fiber composites were increased significantly compared to that of the untreated one with functional groups and surface roughness, respectively. The damping property of the treated composite with surface roughening was the highest among the different composite systems.
