Transit-economic Aspects of Developing Regions' Highway Development—The Case of Chongqing

Government's strategic decisions and policies play definite dominant roles in economic growth of developing regions. Due to historical and social comprehensive environmental impact, transport infrastructures of developing regions usually take on depression status and traditional theory argue that bad traffic seriously hamper economic development of these areas. Accordingly, Local governments spare no effort to promote transportation infrastructure. In order to measure the effectiveness and adaptability of highway development in developing regions, we established autoregressive distributed lag model and the VEC model, and then make the impulse response analysis according to the Chongqing "transiteconomic" composite system data during the year 19852010, interpreting the interaction of economy and transport in developing regions. We find that if transportation is not the constraint then no amount of additional investment is likely to create economic benefit.
