Deformations of Soil Reinforced Walls in Relationship with Reinforcement Used

Deformations become the main design parameter when serviceability limit state analysis becomes more restrictive than ultimate limit state analysis. In this paper, deformation of soil reinforced walls will be related to the properties of the reinforcement material. A 5m high soil reinforced wall will be analysed to relate deformation using a double twisted hexagonal wire mesh and a geosynthetics bonded geogrid as reinforcements. The performances of the double twisted hexagonal wire mesh will be evaluated using test in air and confined in soil. The maximum deformation of the wall is 75% higher in air than in confined soil condition. The confined soil condition represents a more realistic behaviour of the reinforcement. Short-term deformation of a geosynthetics bonded geogrid happen during construction and cannot be highlighted due to the soil consolidation process. Therefore, only a long-term analysis is conducted where only viscous deformation due to creep are accountable.
