For pulsating heat pipes, the capillary flow pattern will change with the operation.High performance means smaller thermal resistance and higher transferred power.The flow patterns are important for understanding the mechanism and the thermal designs of pulsating heat pipe, and they have close relations with the performances.The experimental studies on pulsating heat pipe flow are summarized for different flow pattern, and the thin liquid film heat transfer of high performance operation is discussed with the flow pattern of ditch.The theoretical analysis of startup and operating of pulsating heat pipe are given and resulted.The boundaries of temperature difference and heat flux to start up pulsating heat pipes, the mechanism about the ratio of latent heat transfer to the total for operations are demonstrated and concluded.Some designs and mechanisms to pulsating heat pipe are proposed and emphasized for the future applications.
