ARTIFICIAL EVALUATION OF GENOTYPES/VARIETIES OF SUGARCANE FOR RESISTANCE TO SMUT DISEASE

Field experiment was conducted at VSI, Pune during 2008-09 and 2009-10 crop seasons to assess the resistance behaviour of different sugarcane genotypes / varieties from zonal varietal trials (Peninsular Zone H) to smut fungus (Ustilago scitaminae Sydow.) under artificial disease condition. The observations regarding the smut disease incidence were recorded fortnightly up to the harvest of the crop and the genotypes were classified reaction-wise. Out of 51 genotypes, 22 genotypes viz., CoSnk 05101, Co 06024, CoM 05082, CoVSI 05122, Co 05007, Co 06002, CoN 03131, CoSnk 06104, CoVSI 05123, Co 0403, CoM 06084, Co 06026, Co 05001, CoSnk 05105, MS 0301, Co 06015, CoM 06082, CoN 05071, MS 06081, CoM 0326, Co 0409 and CoSnk 03822 were found resistant to smut disease; while, 24 reacted as moderately resistant and 5 genotypes reacted as moderately susceptible.
