The proper operation of a combustion unit requires that all of the operational parameters of the system bernproperly characterized. Organic waste liquids are difficult to burn by their vary nature. These wastes have thernpotential to have variable properties which may change on a daily or hourly basis. By properly characterizing thernvariable nature of the liquid waste, it can be handled safely and efficiently in a variety of methods. Improper nozzlesrnor operational methods can lead to early failure of the combustion system.rnA high performance burner burning waste tars experienced many operational problems. The performancerngradually decreased after 10 years of operation. The refractory operational life had decreased to 6 months betweenrnmajor refractory rebuilds. The waste tar nozzle had to be changed out two and three times during an operationalrnshift. The waste material had a high viscosity and was extremely reactive to water. Steam atomization resulted inrnthe frequent fouling of the nozzles which distorted the spray pattern. Refractory degradation resulted from the poorrnatomization pattern.rnA nozzle was developed that provided a well controlled spray pattern. The improved spray pattern significantlyrnreduced the potential for fouling. Nozzle change out was increased to a biweekly event. The refractory modificationrncoupled with the modified nozzle increased the operational life of the unit from 6 months to over 30 months.rnThese improvements were made without impacting the operational characteristics or capabilities of the unit.
