Pure metallic silver in the form of highporosity silver particles can be added to a broad range of coating systems as an environmental friendly antimicrobial agent (e. g. wet coatings, coil coatings, powder coatings). By using high throughput screening the most effective concentrations of silver within the coating systems can be identified fast and cost effective. Due to the metallic silver depot a long term activity can be expected and makes these system ideally suited for many technical applications. The nanocomposite coating using metallic silver clusters embedded in a SiO_x plasma polymer film is particulary of high interest for medical applications. Not only transparent coatings on polymers with high antimicrobial efficacy can be realised but also metallic parts like implants can be coated with this technology.
