The objective of this effort was to evaluate the use of AGM Li-Ion cylindrical cells in the BB-2600/U and BB-2800/U rechargeable battery configurations. The prototype batteries were evaluated in terms of performance against the batteries currently procured. In earlier efforts, testing of individual AGM cells demonstrated that the Li-Ion cylindrical cells have the potential of significant performance improvements in both the BB-2600/U and BB-2800/U batteries. The prototype batteries incorporate a State of Charge (SOC) indicator and are 100% compatible with the Soldier Portable Charger (SPC) charger. The BB-2600/U prototype battery demonstrated a significant performance improvement over the BB-2600/U battery currently procured (domestic). At Full Capacity Discharge (FCD) (2.0 A/25 ℃) and Low Temperature discharge (2.0 A/-20 ℃), the prototype AGM BB-2600/U battery delivered a 23% and 111 % improvement; respectively, over the domestic BB-2600/U battery. At FCD (2A/25℃) the AGM BB2800/U battery showed a 14% improvement over the domestic battery. However, there was no improvement over the domestic battery for the -30℃ discharge. The prototype AGM BB-2800/U battery, delivered 4.2 and 3.4 Ah at FCD and -30 ℃ discharge; whereas, the domestic battery delivered 3.7 and 3.5 Ah; respectively The ultimate goal is to develop a more efficient, cost effective, reliable and of longer duration power source than any currently available system. This in turn would lighten the soldier's load and reduce logistics and disposal costs by developing superior portable power supplies
