Recent Advancements in Rechargeable Silver-Zinc Batteries for Military Applications

The Ag-Zn couple has been a topic of interest since Junger started work on secondary battery implementations of this electrochemical couple. The uniquely combination of high power and energy of Ag-Zn batteries, accompanied by intrinsically safe aqueous chemistry, continues to attract interest. Zinc Matrix Power Inc. has, for the past several years, extended the frontiers of Ag-Zn technology with the intent to commercialize rechargeable Ag-Zn batteries for broad civilian and military uses. This paper discusses present challenges encountered in building sealed, rechargeable silver-zinc batteries designed for the Land Warrior program. We will discuss particularly basic electrode and separator issues and significant progress made to address these limitations.
