The Orian Rugs, Inc. plant in Anderson, SC utilizes a continuous extrusion process to manufacture yarn for their rug weaving operation. Located at the end of a long distribution feeder, their circuit has been susceptible to frequent power quality disturbances, primarily voltage sags. These disturbances to the sensitive extrusion process are very costly, producing wasted material and lengthy restart times, equating to lost production and lost revenue. Duke Power worked with Orian to increase equipment ride-through capability and decrease sensitivity to power quality disturbances. Using equipment-level solutions, better ride-through performance was attained, however due to the frequency and magnitude of the isturbances from the system, the plant was still experiencing costly disruptions to processes. It was clear that a solution would have to be applied at the system level to achieve the desired performance during disturbances.
