Increasing Substation Capacity: Meeting the Growing Electric Needs of a Commercial Transmission Customer

When the world's second largest software developer built its own transmission substation and distribution system, it did not fully anticipate the energy demand growth of its burgeoning development campus. Faced with capacity constraints from its local utility, the commercial company evaluated nearly a dozen options to address an integrated approach to projected increased demand and other secondary objectives. The evaluation resulted in a decision to install switched capacitor banks on primary feeders to the company's headquarters campus.
