Over the last decade Hydrated Lime has gained strong acceptance as a dry sorbent for Acid Gas Mitigation purposes. That broader acceptance paved the way for advancements in the reactivity and in-flight capture properties of the sorbent and advancements in the objectives of its use. Simply put, what was initially a tool for environmental compliance has achieved much broader application as an operational weapon. As coal fired generation works to define its place in the energy supply market, it must be able to respond to the constant changes in the availability of solar and wind power yet remain price competitive with large scale combined cycle facilities. This paper will report on advancements in unit turndown, modifications in traditional Average Cold End Temperature set points and reductions in traditional hot gas heat rate losses that have been achieved using High Reactivity Hydrated lime in new and novel ways.
