This paper presents development of a new buffer additive for use in wet FGD systems in coal-fired power plants. The additive, lactic acid produced via fermentation, has been successfully tested in several full-scale wet FGD systems at large coal-fired electric generating units. Results demonstrate that the new additive can control SO_2 emissions as well as other organic acid additives. Lactic acid appears highly resistant to chemical degradation in forced-oxidation wet FGD conditions which resulted in a substantial reduction in required usage compared with dibasic acid. Available technical grade lactic acid products have special properties which may reduce their operating cost and increase their ease of use compared with alternative buffer additives. Lactic acid could provide operators of coal-fired generating units with an additional source of FGD buffer additive which may significantly increase availability of such additives.
