This paper presents the new generation of high-speed gas engine of the Jenbacher type 6 in the 1.8 - 3 MW output range. The first generation of type 6 gas engine was launched in 1988 and has constantly been improved over the years. Meanwhile more than 1,600 units have been delivered worldwide, running with different gas types and are available as 12-, 16- and 20-cylinder with an output of up to 150 kW per cylinder. The so called F-version of the type 6 is the fifth generation of the engine family and was introduced in 2007.rnThe new F-version of the type 6 is an upgrade taking advantage of improved control and combustion technology. In order to improve the economic efficiency of gas engines for cogeneration applications, during the development stage the most modern hardware and software tools have been utilized. These are employed on the product to be optimized together with components already commercially available as for example high-performance turbochargers in combination with optimized valve timing. With this so called Miller timing the engine can be operated either with advanced ignition timing in order to gain efficiency or with standard timing achieving a higher specific output at poor gas quality regarding knocking resistance. Through these modifications it was possible to achieve an improvement in efficiency (with the same power output of the engine) of more than 1.5 % points or up to 10% specific output at low methane number of the fuel gas.
