The liberalization policy of the European Union has resulted in a movement toward arnderegulated power generation market. Monopolistic and stable market conditions have beenrnconverted to a competitive environment. Defined environmental regulations and permits willrnbe replaced by market oriented improvement mechanisms.rnAs deregulation creates a more performance based market structure, sustained competitivernadvantage will emerge as a key driver. In the past monopolistic structures and a regulationrnauthority defining the electricity sales price based on generating cost plus a margin resulted inrna cost pass through revenue oriented power generation market. In today’s marketrnenvironment the power producer has to consider each of its power plants as a profit center, inrnorder to ensure the profitability of its fleet.rnOut of this competitive environment the market for power plant modernizations has beenrngrowing. The number of products available in this market as well as the overall plantrnoptimization by bundling of these products is today’s challenge from the conceptual phase ofrna power plant modernization project all the way through implementation.rnOf course the successful implementation of a power plant modernization starts with therndecision about the conceptual direction. When the main concept has been chosen, the qualityrnof the concept will be defined by the choice of supportive products for the project. Withinrnthis paper the process of conceptual engineering will be described. Furthermore an overviewrnregarding the main concept and the supportive products will be provided.rnIt is intended to provide background information to plant operator, to participate activelyrnwithin the conceptual phase for a plant modernization project.
