Today’s power producers are tasked with selecting technology that delivers the mostrnfavourable balance between capital cost, high fuel efficiency, availability, operatingrnexpenses and environmental performance. In this business environment, GE Energyrncontinues to improve its product range to meet these sometimes conflictingrnrequirements.rnThe 6FA gas turbine, a 70 MW class advanced F-technology heavy-duty gas turbinernhas proven to be a popular machine in Europe, where 66 of these units have beenrnordered and installed for power and cogeneration. Developed in the early nineties forrnmoderate incremental capacity additions, the frame 6FA was uprated two years agornfor higher output and efficiency. The first two of eleven 6FA Enhanced gas turbinesrnare located at Stadtwerke Duisburg, Germany in a combined cycle plant for thernexpansion of an existing cogeneration site. Additional sites currently under erection inrnEurope are located near the city of Limerick, Ireland to provide power and processrnsteam for a large aluminum refining facility as well as power for the Irish grid and inrnItaly, near Siracusa, Sicily to generate power for a refinery.rnThis paper will summarize the recent design improvements and product developmentsrnbased on proven technologies as applied to mid-size heavy-duty gas turbines to meetrnthe multiple customers needs. Focus is on validation tests, highlighting factory testrnresults and underscoring the engineering characterization tests achieved at the launchrnsite, in normal operating conditions.
