In the context of an increasing realization of the environmental requirements for usingrnrenewable energy sources a CFB gasifier on the Ruien (Belgium) power plant site was built.rnThe selected type of gasifier lies in the range of 50 MW nominal thermal power. It wasrndecided to use the obtained low heating value gases in co-combustion mode in an existingrncoal fired boiler. This had the advantage that gasification gas cleaning equipment was notrnrequired. Fluegas cleaning by itself was already part of the boiler equipment. Commercialrnoperation of the gasifier equipment started beginning 2003rnThe context and prime motivations for the realization of such a project are explained. Therntechnical concept of a CFB gasifier is shown together with the actual implementation on thernexisting power plant and consequent modifications on the coal fired boiler. Also the logisticsrn(wood receiving station, handling,…) will be explained. The layout with its inherentrnlimitation related to modifications of an existing plant is explained briefly.rnBiomass fuel selection is of major importance when it comes to availability versus fuelrndiversity. From the start of the project it was decided that normal fuel for continuousrnoperation would be essentially wood (old and fresh wood). Nevertheless the concept of thernCFB gasifier makes it possible to use a much broader range of fuels.rnRelated to the environmental context the global impact on emissions is illustrated. Thisrnequipment makes it possible to replace about 10 % of coal fuel by biomass on the concernedrn200 Mwel power plant. With gasifier nominal thermal power about 120GWh green electricityrncan be produced annually which corresponds to about 120kton/year of CO2 reduction.rnProject realization with planning and major milestones will be covered. Another topic ofrnmajor importance is the experience feedback of building and operate the CFB gasifier. Thisrnitem will be explained in detail.
