RECENT ADVANCES IN ULTRA SUPER CRITICAL STEAM TURBINE TECHNOLOGY

Forecast of a dramatic rise in fuel costs, improved technology and an emerging interest on reducing power plant emissions have combined to revitalize power industry interest in coal-fired power plants using ultra-super critical (USC) steam conditions.rnDoosan Heavy Industries has been developing USC power plants with record-breaking steam parameters approaching or exceeding levels of 260 bar and 621□ for the future 1000MW application under the cooperation of GE.rnThe most important objective raised by this developing USC steam turbine is the extremely high efficiency target. The advanced performance is due to the design of the steam turbine, the high steam parameter selected, the sophisticated system configurations and the longest last stage bucket. The performance of steam path components such as nozzles, buckets and seals has been significantly enhanced as a result of applying this new technology. In addition to the steam path components, performance gains also can be achieved by optimizing stationary components such as valves, inlets and exhausts, using he CFD tools.rnThe new developing USC project will illustrate the latest design and technology capabilities of both Doosan and GE, and will set the standard for future 1000MW USC applications in Korea, as well as elsewhere in the world.
