ASSESSMENT OF RENEWABLE ENERGY POTENTIAL AT HENGCHUN IN TAIWAN

This study analyzes wind and solar energy potential at Hengchun in Taiwan. The Central Weather Bureau in Taiwan provided the data, which were collected during the period 2001-2010. The Weibull distribution function was used for analyzing wind potential. The isotropic sky model is used to analyze total irradiation of the sun. The results point out that wind speed reached peak in spring and winter. However, solar radiation as well as solar energy were peaked in summer. Wind directions most commonly come from the north-north-east, with 32%. Annual wind mean speed is 3.41 m/s at height of 22 m in the practical station. The longest sunny time is in May and Jun with 13.33 hours of sunshine, while in January and December sunshine is only 10.75 hours. The study showed that Hengchun is the best area for wind and solar energy resource. The results obtained benefit the users of the wind and solar energy in Taiwan.
