Distributed generation sources are widely used in power systems due to various advantages. In relation to the electrical equipment for supply to the grid, it is necessary to explore ways of compensating in terms of harmonics and reactive power, since devices such as the inverter, motor load, and arc furnace could have a useless influence on the grid. The photovoltaic (PV)-active filter (AF)-static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) system is used to provide power from PV generation systems to utilities; PV-AF-STATCOM system can compensate harmonic as AF and reactive power as reactive power, without extra devices. In this study, a 5 kW grid-connected PV-AF-STATCOM system is modeled and analyzed using power system computer aided design/electro-magnetic transient design and control (PSCAD/EMTDC), and the simulation results show that the PV-AF-STATCOM system can compensate for reactive power and harmonic currents without any influence on the grid. Thus, the AF-STATCOM system with PV can be employed to compensate for harmonics and reactive power.
