Predicting the Optimum Thickness of Powder Antifriction Layers in Bimetal Bearings

This paper investigates stress systems in bimetal bearings consisting of powder sprayed antifriction surface layers with solid metal backing. The maximum contact pressure, tangential normal and equivalent stresses in the anti friction layers are calculated and analysed. It is concluded that reducing the thickness of the coating from 0.5 to 0.1mm increases the contact pressures and shear stresses by up to Jive times. It is further demonstrated that the distribution of radial load in the coating is dependent on its modulus of elasticity. Relationships are proposed for calculating optimum coating thicknesses.
