When elaborating sintered friction materials (SFM), the first - and decisive - influence upon their friction - antiwear features lies in their forever complex composition. However the powdered material (most frequently metallic) dedicated to the achievement of the basic matrix of the sintered parts determines their friction - wear behavior to a great extent. The paper aims at determining the main features of the behavior various types of SFM (based on iron, copper, bronze) that previously to composition and technological parameters, i.e. related to only the basic material nature. The criteria for the basic component selection (such as: wear resistance, friction coefficient values, thermal properties, cost, etc.) are established and on their basis the intrinsic properties of the materials that in powdered state can constitute the basic components for these friction parts are analyzed in a complex manner.
