In the two last decades, improvement of PM steels has opened the field for highly stressed automotive applications, and has in turn reinforced the need for material scientists to provide accurate material properties for design engineers. A close link needs to be establish between the two, since the latter require for FEA calculations both relevant static and dynamic properties of potential materials and the former can emphasize the role played by the composition or the processing route. This paper focuses on the latest results obtained at Federal Mogul Sintered Products with respect to mechanical properties of high strength alloys for synchronizing hubs and high density applications. Considerations about composition and processing conditions will be especially highlighted: results on new alloy compositions (chromium-containing alloys) will be presented and the effect of processing conditions (cooling rate, sizing...) on both static and fatigue results will be discussed.
