MDI, TDI and the Environment

Approximately 4 million metric tons of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) are manufactured and used worldwide per year. These materials are well controlled and only small amounts are released to the environment. This presentation summarizes existing information on the release and behavior of MDI and TDI in the environment. In the environment MDI and TDI react to form primarily innocuous polyureas. MDI and TDI are reacted with polyols to form the many different polyurethane products. Polyurethanes have been shown to be stable in the environment and on disposal have no adverse impact on municipal waste handling processes, landfills or incineration.
