The objective of this paper is to study the performance of vertical cuts with and without soil-nailed shoring systems tested in a large beam centrifuge facility available at IIT Bombay. This paper presents results of three centrifuge model tests on soil-nailed shoring systems conducted at 30 g. In-flight excavation was carried-out using a pneumatic based plate supported excavator. This paper also discusses merits and demerits of various types of in-flight excavators. Soil nails were modeled using thin aluminum tubes coated with sand blended epoxy and installed by drilling holes at 1 g itself. For comparison purposes, a centrifuge test was carried-out without any nailing and nail-facing arrangement. The analysis and interpretation of centrifuge tests reveal the importance of facing in ensuring the stability to the soil-nailed shoring system.
