We proposed a nonlinear equalization scheme based Wiener - Hammerstein model to combat nonlinear distortion caused by fiber nonlinearity which is a major performance-limiting factor in advanced optical communication systems. Compared with other popular nonlinear compensation techniques such as the Volterra model and linear model, the wiener Hammerstein model approach has a simpler structure, requires less calculation and has good performances. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the capability of a wiener Hammerstein model based electrical equalizer used in a coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system. The performances of all different schemes were compared with respect to bit error ratio, transmission distance, optical signal to noise ratio.
