Electroluminescent ternary and binry rodcoil copolymer systems have bene synthesized,charactieized,and used to explore the effects o fsolid state supramolecular structure and morphology onthe mechanism and quantum effiicency of electroluminescence.Enhanced electroluminescence dure to effiicent flelectornic energy transfer was obsewrved in ternary od-coil -rod copolymer systems containing two rodlike segments with different excitation enegies,compared to the correspeonding binary copolmers.Binary rod-coil copolymers which incorporate,into the rodlike segments,moieties that exhibit excited state intramolecular proton transffer were found that exhibit excited state intramolecular proton transfer were found to be electroluminescent via a novel mechanims,electrically generated intramolecular prton transfer (EGIPT).The inherent population inversion in the EGIPT process together with the observed stimulated emission impley the feasibility of electrically incduced lasing in htis class of mateirals.EGIPT was found to occur in only rod-coil copolymers with low rod-to-coil molar ratios,suggesting the profound effect of supramolecular structure.
