Fuel oxygenates are a class of organic of organic compounds currently added to gasoline as an octane enhancer in order to reduce carbon monoxide emissions from non-stationary sources; thus, meeting the requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment. The most widely used oxygenate is methoyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) with an annual consuption of more than four billion gallons in the united States. Daily use in California is approximately 100,000 barrels per day, or nearly 40 percent of the dail use in the United States. other oxygenates include ethanol, ethyl tertiary-butyl ether (ETBE), tertiary-amyl methoyl ether (TAME), tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA). diisopropyl ether (DIPE), and methanol.
