Advanced Coating Solutions for the Marine Industry

Thermal spray technology is an additive surface engineering solution that offers benefits for the marine industry, such as improving corrosion performance, and also addresses the environmental protection agencies regulations of lowering VOC emissions. The potential for anti-corrosive solutions using the thermal spraying process are widely recognised in the shipping and marine industry. Steel super structures and vessels, for example, have been coated with zinc or aluminium based metal composites to help minimise corrosion. In the first part of this paper we will provide an overview of thermal spray coatings that have been used in the marine industry and discuss other potential applications. The authors have undertaken investigations into thermal spray technology to provide functional coatings for marine hydraulic applications. This has included studies of the corrosion and biofouling performance of the latest generation High Velocity Oxygen Fuel (HVOF) high quality carbide based coatings that can be applied to hydraulic components subjected in immersed marine environment. The results of this work, including field trials at sites around Australia, will also be presented.
