Durable papers are required to maintain their shape and properties under circulation of uses. In order to meet durability, high mechanical strength and anti-soiling performance should be required. Anti-soiling properties mean the ability to resist toward contaminants and water. Durable papers have been made by the impregnation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or the surface treatment using polyurethane (PU). However, durability should be more enhanced considering the use in extremely humid condition. In this study, cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) was chosen for the production of high durable papers because CNF is known as a reinforcing element for various composite. The effect of CNF on the durability of papers was investigated depending on the way of CNF application: impregnation of CNF with PVA, coating of CNF and modified CNF. In the impregnation, the addition level of CNF based on PVA was controlled. In the coating, the coat weight of papers was controlled and CNF suspension and modified CNF suspension was used to increase anti-soiling properties of papers. The result suggests that CNF coating process was more effective than PVA/CNF impregnation in the view of the durability.
