Industrial symbiosis is the association between two or more industrial facilities in which the wastes or byproducts of one company become the raw material for another. Acting co-operatively operating costs can be reduced and new business and job opportunities open up. This presentation will give an overview of the MBIE funded project Wood-Energy Industrial Symbiosis. The programme conducted a wide range of case studies and analyses to identify and to quantify industrial symbiosis opportunities. A high-level description of three key outputs of the programme will be discussed; 1. A feasibility study comparing the use of wood residues with fossil fuels for process heat showed that over the lifetime the economics for wood fuel were favourable. 2. The existing symbiosis that occurs at Kawerau, is described in a cluster model. This model has been used to investigate the value (EBITDA, GDP, Employment, etc) of additional process units. 3. A mapping tool that overlays a range GIS data layers (eg residues, heat demand, etc) to identify industrial symbiosis opportunities. The two following talks will go into more detail on two specific projects around the Kawerau Industrial Cluster and the Kinleith Pulp and paper mill that were conducted as part of the programme.
