Due to the indiscreet nature of snorŒng, when on task an SSK diesel-electric submarinernmay be required to withdraw to a stand-o€ distance to conduct charging ofrnthe main storage ba‹ery, reducing the producŒve Œme on task. In addiŒon, opera-rnŒonal constraints such as the maintenance of a ba‹ery state of charge lower limit,rnrestricŒons on ba‹ery charging to only certain periods of the day, and the vessel’srnhotel load each have a signicant e€ect on the e€ecŒveness of the submarine. Thisrnpaper explores the impact of these constraints on e€ecŒveness of the submarine,rnas dened by the raŒo of producŒve Œme, to the total Œme spent in the operaŒonsrnarea.rnResults froma numerical simulaŒon model, Defence Science and Technology Group’srnIntegrated PlaŠorm System Model (IPSM) are presented for a sample submarinerndesign. The results demonstrate the relaŒonships and the trade-o€ space createdrnby the interacŒon of these requirements. Understanding of this trade-space is importantrnwhen selecŒng measures of submarine performance in the specicaŒonrnof a submarine design. This study explores both technology and operaŒonal basedrnmethods for improving submarine e€ecŒveness.rnThe IPSM has been developed by DST Group as a tool for conducŒng plaŠorm levelrnperformance assessments of naval vessels. Currently the IPSM is being employedrnto provide advice to the SEA1000 Future Submarine Project.
