This paper presents the findings of a pilot study designed to examine the effect of various treatment conditions on biodegradable organic matter (BOM) and the following parameters: nonvolatile organic carbon (NVOC), trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP), adsorbable organic halide formation potential (AOXFP), chlorine demand and selected aldehydes. BOM was measured by the methods of Werner and van der Kooij (utilizing Pseudomonas fluorescens strain P17 and Spirillum strain NOX). Samples were obtained from a pilot plant located in Edmonton, Canada. The plant incorporated a common pre-treatment section consisting of coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation. Following this, the flow was split, with half going to each of two ozone contactors. In contactor number 1 the dosage was 0.5 mg O_3/mg NVOC while in contactor 2 it was 1.0 mg O_3/mg NVOC. Following each ozone contactor the flow was split between two dual-media filters which operated at different hydraulic loading rates (5 and 10 m/h). Each filter was followed by a GAC contactor equipped with sampling ports at various depths.
