Abstract: The polar ozone and aerosol measurement experiment(POAM II) was launched on the SPOT 3 satellite on 25September 1993. POAM II is designed to measure thevertical profiles of the polar ozone, aerosols, watervapor, nitrogen dioxide, atmospheric density andtemperature in the stratosphere and upper troposphere.It makes solar occultation measurements in ninechannels defined by narrow-band filters. The field ofview is 0.01 by 1.2 degrees, with an instantaneousvertical resolution of 0.6 km at the tangent point inthe earth's atmosphere. The SPOT 3 satellite is in a98.7-degree inclined sun-synchronous orbit at analtitude of 833 km. From the measured transmissions, itis possible to determine the density profiles ofaerosols, O$-3$/, H$-2$/O, and NO$-2$/. Using theassumption of uniformly mixed oxygen, we are also ableto determine the temperature. We present details of thePOAM II instrument design, including the opticalconfiguration, electronics and measurement accuracy. Wealso present preliminary results from the occultationmeasurements made to date. !0
