TECHNOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES OF 'ULYSSES': THE OFFICIAL WWW SITE OF THE HELLENIC MINISTRY OF CULTURE

In this paper we present the technological perspectives and successful role of ULYSSES, the WWW site of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture (HMC), in the reliable online promotion and dissemination of Hellenic Cultural Heritage. A joint activity between the HMC and HPCLab, ULYSSES is constantly expanding in content and enhanced in applications, services, technologies since its inception and first introduction in 1995. The site's information structure and content categories, with more than 30,000 hypermedia pages and database-driven material, are examined. Core applications and services are presented and statistics of worldwide access and uses of ULYSSES are outlined, in addition to feedback from online visitors and the media. Working towards further establishing ULYSSES' role as the premier portal of Hellenic Culture on the Internet, ULYSSES' new content management architecture of heterogeneous information sources using metadata is discussed. Finally, novel features to be gradually introduced include virtual walkthroughs of museums, virtual exhlibitions, guided tours, on-line educational games.
