SECURE VPNs - MAKING ELEARNING FAST, EFFICIENT, AND SECURE

Virtual Private Networks offer schools and business organizations a flexible, private and cost effective method to access internal networks using public networks like the Internet. Whether deploying a VPN for secure remote access, school to school connectivity, or student and teacher extranet applications, the IT manager must implement a solution that matches security requirements, available IT resources and fit into it's existing or planned network architecture. Should your school's security policy demand strong authentication to identify those requesting access to your internal resources, a PKI enabled VPN using X.509 digital certificates is strongly recommended. The Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) protocol as specified by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is the accepted standard for Internet-based VPNs. The IPSec standard suggests the use of digital certificates for strong authentication for devices within VPNs. This presentation will provide a framework for the IT manager to use when implementing a Secure VPN using standards-based X.509 digital certificates.
