A Multivendor Data-Exchange Format To Support Digital Oilfields

Over the past decade the rapid evolution of InformationrnTechnology has enabled oil companies to much morerneffectively exploit hydrocarbon reserves than was possible uprnto now. These technologies all rely on an extensive set ofrninstrumentation and controls.rnThe expected benefits of this novel approach to oilfieldrnmanagement are very high, but can only be harvested byrnmeans of an appropriate IT infrastructure and data exchangernprotocols.rnPRODML (PRODuction xML) is a proposed data exchangernmechanism which will facilitate the integration betweenrnsoftware tools that are used in combination to turn rawrnproduction data into control actions.rnPRODML intends to be an industry standard XML-basedrnexchange format for production data. The scope of the firstrnversion of PRODML will be determined by what can reliablyrnbe delivered in a one year period.rnThis first version will support data exchange betweenrnapplications in the office domain with emphasis on near-realrntime optimisation. In this context, near-real time optimisationrnis defined as optimisation that can be achieved by makingrnchanges in the existing production configuration that can berneffectuated within one day.rnThe overall approach follows the successful example of thernWITSML project, which established a similar set ofrnspecifications for the drilling domain.rnPRODML was initiated jointly by BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil,rnShell and Statoil in early 2005.rnThe initiative has since been joined by Halliburton, Invensys,rnOSIsoft, Petex, Schlumberger, Sense-Intellifield, Tietoenatorrnand Weatherford, and is now in the process of developing thernstandard. POSC has agreed to take over stewardship of therneffort once work on the first version has been completed andrnto foster further developments. The paper represents the work of the entire team.
